The Battery Art Show Vol. VIII, The Wicked, showcases work from a group of artists with strong ties to the Bay Area, many young and emerging, anchored by notable mid–career luminaries. They are unified by their collective embrace and utilization of craft and vernacular forms, such as textile weaving, quilting, slick fabrication, and comic figuration. Throughout the show we encounter pieces proudly displaying evidence of their arduous making, demonstrating that for these artists labor is a virtue. This common principle materializes in diverse formal and conceptual ends, with works appearing simultaneously optimistic and uneasy, sincere and satirical—oscillating between humorous irreverence, political cynicism and spiritual introspection. In addition to weekly and impromptu tours of the exhibition, we will present a series of events and lectures related to the show. We encourage those interested to attend and learn more about the ideas and motivations behind the work.
This exhibition, "The Wicked", was curated by Thomas Moller and Matt Bernstein.
