ICON: A New Exhibit The Battery

The directors of The Art Program at The Battery, Thomas Moller and Matt Bernstein, are pleased to announce the opening of the twelfth exhibition at The Battery, ICON, curated by Thomas Moller.

The exhibition uses the variety of definitions of the word “icon” as its starting point, and features a broad range of artists that address each of these varying explanations. Utilizing a diversity of mediums, works alternatively critique or celebrate a cross section of icons, including political figures, religious deities, seminal points in American history, cultivation rituals, musicians, sports stars, and art historical tropes.

For this group of artists, it is imperative that the icon not only be exalted, but questioned, challenged, and provoked. Within each work is the acknowledgment of an individual or idea that has transcended its discipline and entered the broader social consciousness, opening themselves up to be used as visual and conceptual fodder. Depending on the disposition of the artist, the icon is revered or dismantled using sincerity, humor, and wit. This process allows the artists to open a conversation with, and take ownership of, symbols larger than themselves.

This exhibition, "ICON", was curated Thomas Moller.
